Jackie L.

There are so many things going around about social media.  If you follow a few gurus, you will hear some conflicting information about the best way to approach your social media strategy.  Over 47% of small business owners are running social media on their own, and it can make you feel overwhelmed on what to do.

We’re going to talk about and dispel 4 common myths going around on social media to help you with your small business.

Social Media is Free

This social media myth is not talking about the financial cost.  That part can be free.  But, you are spending something much more precious than money on your social media. That is your time.  Social media takes a lot of time to begin, keep up with, and maintain. If you are a small business owner, most of your time may go to social media.  That is not the best place to focus your time and efforts in your business.

If you find you are spending too much time on and getting frustrated with social media, hire a social media manager to help you.

You have to be on all the platforms

This is one social media myth that may make you feel overwhelmed.  The good news is, you do not need to be on every platform!  However, if that’s the case, what platforms should you be on?  The easiest way to figure this out is research where your target audience spends the most time.  Every generation favors a certain platform or two. Once you figure this out, pick two to focus on and create your social media strategy from there.

Your grid has to be aesthetically pleasing

This social media myth can make most business owners feel the most overwhelm. This may make you feel like you need to be a graphic designer to have a cohesive, beautiful grid feed.  Lucky for you, this is a myth!  The best thing to do when it comes to your grid is to treat it like a website.  Make your graphics simple and easy to scan for information.  Make it easy to navigate your grid feed so your followers and potential customers get exactly what they are looking for.

It’s all about short form video

This social media myth surprised a lot when platforms like TikTok surfaced, along with Instagram stating they were prioritizing video over photos. Many business owners felt worried about being in front of the camera.  Others felt defeated as they were struggling with just photos.  The good news is, you don’t need to do only short form videos!  The best social media strategy for your small business is to have a wide variety of media, which includes video and images.

There are a lot of social media myths floating around.  When you hear them, take it with a grain of salt. The best way to succeed with social media is to create content that your followers love, nurture them, and do what fits best with your small business!
